LP Assignment Schedule and Packet was given out today in class. Please look over this carefully and do the assignments as they are dated so you don't fall behind. Remember this is the work to be done during the week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday's!

Also, today we did an in class packet on work. 60 % of the class really tried with 40 % spending their time looking for ways to not do the assignment. This will come back to haunt you during your meetings with your Point of Contact Teacher when they read the comments of how you are doing in class.

Portfolio, New Bio Color Pages on the Environment - 15 minutes
Bill Nye Labs on Chemistry DVD - 15 minutes
Chemistry Experiment Lab - 50 minutes
- Tools of the Lab
- Experiment 1 with Water
- Experiment 2 with Vinegar
- Reflection on what transpired
Vinegar is composed of about 5% acetic acid. This is the major chemical component of vinegar.
The systematic or proper chemical name of acetic acid is ethanoic acid.
Vinegar is a weak acid produced by the oxidation of alcohol (ethanol) from wines and ciders by bacteria. It has a pleasant sour taste and is used in cooking or as a condiment. It is commercially sold as white vinegar, brown vinegar, cider vinegar and balsamic vinegar.
The complete structural formula of acetic acid is as follows.

The condensed structural formula for acetic acid (the main component in vinegar) is CH3COOH.This formula is a shorthand way of representing the complete structural formula (see above picture).The first carbon atom is surrounded by three hydrogen atoms. The second carbon atom is surrounded by one oxygen atom and a OH group. Hence it's formula is CH3COOHThe molecular mass or molar mass of acetic acid is 60.05 g/mol
The Experiment today:
Question: What do vinegar and baking soda mixed together yield? What is the balanced equation of this reaction?

Replies: Vinegar is acetic acid: CH3COOH
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate: NaHCO3
Mixing the two is simply and acid base reaction.
CH3COOH + NaHCO3 ---> CH3COONa + H2CO3
That last product is carbonic acid which quickly decomposes into carbon dioxide and water:
H2CO3 ---> H2O + CO2
The CO2 is what you see foaming and bubbling in this reaction.

Seeds in Space Program from NASA click here
Your Seeds flew on Space Shuttle Mission STS 118!
You are to build a growing chamber for your basil seeds with simple recycling materials. Design and construct two chambers so you can plant seeds by next Tuesday. Keep a journal of what you do and what happens with your Space Seeds and the Regular Seeds. The seeds that went into space were exposed to full radiation from the sun. What will happen? Can you predict?

Biology Syllabus was handed out in class today and Due Dates were discussed. Date assigned and dates due are listed on the syllabus.

Biology Lab on Water and Polymer Beads - Environmental Entrepreneurialism!
Student wore Lab Coats, developed lab teams with roles. Conducted  Water Lab with Hydro Beads. Expansion of a Hydro Polymer with H2O.
Lab Notes, Lab Partner
Blue Gold Video Documentary - the story on water!

Student reading of Science Research Reports - Reading what other students wrote on is always interesting.
Seeds from Space! You have been given seeds that flew on STS- Space Shuttle Mission 118.
Please create a way to grow both packets at home and document what you do to design, build and observe the growth of these Basil Seeds that were flown 300 miles above earth surface and exposed to solar radiation. The documentation is a fun long term project and a connection to a select few groups that have access to these seeds.

Biology research papers give high school students a new perspective on biological topics.
A biology research paper written by a high school student should outline, explain and analyze information about a chosen topic. An academic research paper is written based on recent research, historical experiments and discoveries and opinions established throughout years of testing and continuous research. A high school research paper should outline the research, advancements, opinions, and additional information that have contributed to the subject in mind.
